spirit of the "heard girls"

"I'm looking for a time when women are changing the nature of power versus power changing the nature of women" -- Bella Abzug

I'm heading to New Orleans for the long weekend with 18 other gals made up of family and friends ..teenagers, middle agers and young at heart.
This exact weekend a year ago, on the wings of an occasion we'll never forget, we made a pact to keep the spirit of the "Heard Girls"
alive.
To keep the strength, relationships, connections and love
within the girls in our family
alive.
We're women of power every day, in our own right. It makes us who we are, paves the way for who we'll become and is a cornerstone of our character.

We're taking this trip to reconnect, to take part in a service project bigger than ourselves. To give a margin of power no matter the size to the betterment of a community.

We're taking this trip to experience a city trying to move forward in every moment and screaming out for help everyday. A city yearning to find a balance and fill a void. We'll offer our skills, our smiles and a little power through hope to a people and a place filled with extremes of wealth and poverty, success and despair...structures, morale and individuals still smiling, though inevitably tattered and torn.

We're taking this trip to have the sweet opportunity to gather in a circle for hours every night and talk about the day. To truly attempt to absorb and realize our good fortune, the reality before us and our place; our place as women and as a family choosing to use the power we possess to give, receive, appreciate and pass on.

We're excited and inspired. I can't wait to share as our story unfolds.

Laurel this is so beautifully spoken. Thanks for putting into words the feelings of our group. You are such a good spokeswoman for us.
