whew.
what an emotional four days it has been.
between the non-stop tv coverage {which seems to only get worse}, chats with neighbors and friends, and calls and messages from dear friends and family making sure we are ok....i'm just about talked out when it comes to the Nashville Flood.
but for memory, humble and therapy's sake, i feel like i need to just write.
we are ok. lots of people aren't.
this little ole city of mine is a sad sad place.
as the pictures show, thousands of houses are underwater, twenty-two people have perished and more than I want to imagine have lost everything.
the rain.
it.just.wouldn't.stop.
we got 25% of our annual rainfall in two days.
that's a lot. we felt it when it was happening, and it's confirmed every minute.
our house doesn't have a bit of damage.
the businesses one block from my house are closed down. flooded.
losing money every minute. in despair.
my car flooded. all in all we've scooped about
20 gallons
of water out of the backseat.
but there it sits in the sunshine outside of our house.
tow trucks are tied up with pulling piles of cars apart that drifted away and are on the sides of interstates or in the middle of neighborhood streets.
the road to my mechanic's shop is flooded.
and there is a 3 week wait to hear back about insurance.
but that's ok. it's only a car.
a slight inconvenience.
not sure about the fate of our boats. hope they're still tied in their slips
and just floating high.
we won't completely know for about a week or so.
really, it's ok. two fun vessels we're lucky to have.
it'll work itself out, it will.
i'm always amazed and renewed by the spirit of
people
in times like this.
everybody is helping. everybody.
several businesses have made today a "mandatory day off" so employees
can volunteer and help.
can volunteer and help.
that's pretty awesome. really awesome.
and we're helping too.
rumour hit the airwaves and our streets this morning that they are turning our
water off today.
pump stations are flooded. can't keep up.
oh my.
we've had plans to get out of town this weekend
and i'm selfishly ready.
it's hard to watch and feel the devastation and hurt affecting everyone
and feeling helpless.
stay strong, sweet city.

Glad you are safe and sound. I have lots of Family and friends in Nashville & I hate to see such a horrible thing happen.
Such a poignant, heart-felt account of the past few days. The loss and devastation is just horrible for such a vibrant city.
Laurel,
You are welcome to come an hour north WHENEVER you want/need to. We would love to have you.
Amy
Laurel, I couldn't have said it better. In fact, I just sent my readers to your blog and said Ditto!
